As a tortilla production line for tortillerias and flatbread bakeries, the forming-to-oven setup removes the manual transfer step and keeps one operator feeding dough at the front of the line.

One Line, Two Machines — How the Tortilla Production Line Works

A tortilla production line answers the question every growing tortilleria eventually asks: how do we move from a single forming machine to continuous production without adding staff at every step?

The answer is integration. The line is built from two machines that are designed to work together:

1. Tortilla forming machine. Dough is fed into the forming section, where rollers press it to a uniform thickness (1.5–5 mm adjustable). Formed tortillas exit on the conveyor.

2. Electric tortilla tunnel oven. The conveyor carries the formed tortillas directly into the tunnel oven — the same style of tortilla oven used for both corn and flour tortillas in commercial production. Inside, electric heating elements bake them as they travel through. Cooked tortillas exit at the far end, ready for cooling, stacking and packing.

The transfer between forming machine and oven is continuous — no manual handling in between, no one standing at a table pressing and passing tortillas by hand. This is the practical difference between a “line” and a “machine”: the line takes the operator out of the middle of the process.

Customization Options

Every tortilla production line R&M ships is quoted individually, because every bakery’s floor plan and output target is different. These are the options we customize most often:

Gas-fired tunnel oven. The standard configuration is electric (18 kW). Where three-phase power is limited or electricity is expensive, a gas-fired tortilla tunnel oven is available — the same line, with a gas burner system instead of electric heating elements.

Single-level or multi-level tunnel oven. The standard design is a single-level conveyor tunnel. For bakeries with limited floor space, a multi-level (multi-deck) tunnel oven stacks the conveyor passes — the tortillas travel back and forth through multiple levels, giving more baking time and more output in the same footprint. Multi-level designs save floor space, which is usually the deciding factor for an existing building.

Custom dimensions. Both the tortilla making machine and the tunnel oven can be dimensioned to your site. If you have a specific room width, a specific ceiling height, or a particular position where the line must sit, send us the floor plan — we design the line around the space.

Multiple discharge lanes. The line can be set up so several rows of tortillas are produced simultaneously on the conveyor, increasing output without increasing line speed.

What Changes When You Move to a Line

Labor. A forming machine with manual transfer needs someone to move tortillas from the machine to the griddle or oven. The integrated line removes that job — one operator feeds dough and monitors the line.

Consistency. Tortillas cooked in a tunnel oven pass through the same temperature zone for the same time, every piece. Cooking results are uniform in a way that manual griddle work cannot match.

Throughput. The electric line runs 500–1,000 pcs/hr continuously. For a tortilleria supplying wholesale accounts, this is the capacity that turns a retail shop into a production operation.

Space. A forming machine plus a separate oven takes more floor area than the same equipment arranged as a line. And if floor space is the constraint, the multi-level tunnel oven option compresses the baking section further.

Who Buys a Tortilla Production Line

Tortillerias adding a wholesale route. Retail-only shops use a forming machine and cook on a comal or griddle. The moment you take wholesale orders, output and consistency requirements change — that is the point where a line replaces the manual step.

Restaurant supply bakeries. Bakeries supplying tortillas to restaurants, taquerias and food trucks need volume and a repeatable product. The line delivers both.

Flatbread and wrap producers. The forming machine handles flour dough for burrito-size and wrap-style tortillas; the tunnel oven bakes them uniformly. The same line can be configured for larger tortillas by mold selection.

New production facilities. If you are equipping a new tortilla factory, the integrated line is a single-purchase solution: one supplier, one quotation, one installation, one source for parts and service.

Line Components in Detail

Forming section. Stainless steel body, brass forming rollers, thickness adjustment 1.5–5 mm, interchangeable molds for tortilla diameter. Dough size range depends on the forming machine model selected for the line.

Tunnel oven (GD-YMO). The 1,700 mm oven uses a 300 mm conveyor chain. Electric heating of 18 kW provides the baking zone; the motor drives the conveyor continuously. The oven is sized and heated to match the output of the forming section, so the two machines stay in step during a production run.

Optional: gas burner system. Replaces electric heating where gas is the preferred or only practical energy source. Discuss fuel type and availability with us before quoting.

For a single forming machine without the oven, see the separate tortilla forming machine page. Dough for the line can be prepared with R&M’s commercial dough mixers.

Installation and Power Requirements

Power (electric line): 220V/50Hz supply for the motor (750 W) plus a dedicated circuit for the 18 kW heating load. Confirm your site’s electrical capacity before ordering — this is the first question we ask on every line quotation.

Space: the standard line occupies roughly 1.7 m of line length plus the forming machine and operator space. If your room is smaller or you need higher output, the multi-level oven or custom dimensions apply.

Ventilation: an electric tunnel oven produces heat and moisture at the discharge end. Plan for ventilation in the production area, and check local requirements for gas versions.

Installation support: we provide the layout drawing with your quotation, and our team supports installation and commissioning. Contact us for details. For more on tortilla production, see the independent article on tortillas.

Preguntas frecuentes

What does the tortilla production line include?

A tortilla forming machine plus a tunnel oven (standard: electric GD-YMO, 18 kW), integrated so formed tortillas transfer directly into the oven and exit cooked.

How many tortillas per hour?

500–1,000 pcs/hr on the standard electric configuration. Output varies with tortilla size and oven settings. Contact us with your target volume for a line sized to your needs.

Can the line be gas-fired?

Yes. A gas-fired tortilla tunnel oven is available for sites without sufficient electrical capacity or where gas is cheaper.

Can the oven and machine sizes be customized?

Yes. Both the tortilla making machine and the tunnel oven can be dimensioned to your floor plan. Multi-level tunnel oven designs are available for higher output in less floor space.

What is a multi-level tunnel oven?

The conveyor passes through several stacked levels inside the oven instead of a single pass. The tortillas bake over a longer total path in a smaller footprint — the design choice for bakeries where floor space is limited.

Does the line cook the tortillas?

Yes — that is the point of the tunnel oven. The line produces cooked tortillas ready for cooling and packing, unlike a forming machine alone.

Can it produce multiple rows at once?

The line can be configured for several simultaneous discharge lanes, increasing output without raising line speed.

What are the power requirements?

Electric version: 220V/50Hz, 750 W motor plus 18 kW heating. Gas version: gas supply plus 220V/50Hz for the motor. Confirm your utilities before ordering.

What is the price and lead time?

The line is quoted per configuration — forming machine model, oven type (electric/gas), single or multi-level, dimensions, and quantity. Contact us with your requirements for a quotation.
